  • The assets of the financial services sector grew 7.8 percent to $49.0 trillion in 2005 from $45.4 trillion in 2004.

  • The financial services industry‚Äôs gross domestic product (GDP), excluding the real estate sector, reached $927 billion in 2004, accounting for nearly 8 percent of the national GDP.

  • Financial services employed 6 million workers in 2006, accounting for 5 percent of total U.S. employment in private industry.

  • Financial assets of the personal sector almost doubled 1995 to $34.2 trillion in 2005 from $18.6 trillion in 1995. This sector includes households, nonfarm noncorporate business and farm business.

  • Household debt rose 11.7 percent and business debt rose 5.7 percent from 2004 to 2005.

  • Insurance fee income reported by banks rose to $4.6 billion in 2005 from $4.3 billion in 2004.
